Keer Tanchak’s work is a discernible exploration of the canon of painting. Sampling historical artworks and appropriating recognizable techniques and genres, Tanchak honestly proves that emulation is essential for painting - a medium that has always operated in a web of tradition and mass cultural references. While engaging with past epochs such as French rococo or European avant–garde, Tanchak often zooms in on marginalized personages in mise-en-scènes, thus infusing the figures with stronger messages and bringing to light the politics of representation. In her first museum solo exhibition, curated by Dallas Contemporary Assistant Curator Lilia Kudelia, Keer Tanchak creates a site specific installation embracing the architecture and history of the building - the metal fabrication factory. This new body of work aims to push the boundaries of display by engaging the entire physical body through the unification of painting and sculptural installation with shiny aluminum which has continually replaced canvas in Tanchak’s artistic practice. The installation functions as a metaphorical X-ray machine which exposes the basic elements of the painting language: the expressiveness of brushwork, the emotive nature of color, and transcendental quality of scintillating light. The immersive installation further addresses the way we perceive art history at present – through tiny reproductions on our gadget screens which resemble virtual post-it notes of a digital art history book. The exhibition title “Soft Orbit” references many elements manifested in the show: gravitation to primary sources, production of “satellite narratives” around historical works, recurring motifs throughout Tanchak’s own stylistic evolutions, the act of perceiving through gazing, ophthalmic sensations, and futuristic references to her spaceship-like installation. open http://www.dallascontemporary.com

The Salon Series at MDW Fair
MDW Fair For this week's MDW Fair at the new Mana Contemporary, The Salon Series asked eight alumni exhibitors to collaborate on a body of work that addresses the concept of editioning or multiples, and reflects the decisions, edits and play that occur as two practices work together toward a common resolution. The results have been thrilling. Sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing and photography have been elided into hybrid forms that have challenged and inspired our participants. Artists chosen for this show acknowledge the influence of their predecessors, and embrace the nature of art and culture as cumulative. They create work that is unmistakably contemporary, while simultaneously appreciating and commenting on work that “came before”. When discussing the artists in “Remasters,” it is important to analyze their positions on appropriation. As Nicolas Bourriaud states, “Appropriation constructs a lineage between forms, signs and images.” This view is strongly apparent to the artists in the exhibition who use this practice as a model for building conceptual direction. The separation between their practices becomes an issue of semantics as they start to become either “borrowers” or “samplers.”

Tanchak's oil on aluminum paintings range from the small to the very large. Both will be on display as well as preparatory watercolors. Keer's paintings have a foundation in the Rococo fête galante paintings of Watteau and Fragonard but quickly depart into something more modern and weird. Her works blend a political side (are we living with a new aristocracy?), a painterly side (the tension of surface and volume, specificity versus atmosphere) and a refreshingly odd side (what's going on here and why does it matter?). The $40 entry fee includes aperitifs, a three-course dinner with sides and wine/beer pairings per course, and a discussion with the artist about her work. The event starts promptly at 7pm. Tickets are $40 a person. Reservations required. About The Salon Series Each Salon seats up to forty people and includes a three-course, passed dinner with wine pairings followed by a forum led by the artist and moderated by John Coyle Steinbrunner. Dinners are held at The Bluebird on Sundays at 7pm.

Christina Corfield crafts moving dioramas which flaunt the brush of a gaze and the stroke of a sword. Her videos hyperbolize the Old Regime's pretend-sion, ignoring distinctions between historical documentation and fairy tale musings. Redundancy and stripped down actions append significance to the subtlest minutiae. Keer Tanchak's aluminum glamscapes, which mix 1800's lackadaisical malaise with the 2000's self-awareness, quietly invite circumspection of modern wealth and frivolity. Tanchak's exploitation of Old France's artificial flavoring sweetens the modern epidemic dubbed "bourgeois ennui." With seductive visuals and witty commentary, absolutism was never so liberating. Text by Allison Katz, 2007 ![]() December 2007: Keer Tanchak: Lifted PicturesDecember 1, 2006 - January 6, 2007 NAVTASCHULZ GALLERY Contact: Director Ryan Schulz 312.421.5506 or ryan@navtaschulzgallery.com Chicago, IL - NavtaSchulz Gallery is pleased to announce Lifted Pictures, an exhibition of paintings by Chicago-based painter Keer Tanchak. This will be Tanchak's first solo show in Chicago. The title Lifted Pictures is a reference to the artist's penchant for quoting characters from 18thcentury Rococo paintings (specifically those by Jean-Antoine Watteau). Of her chosen subject, Tanchak writes "The 18th century fascination with decadence and romance, and the subsequent political implications of these obsessions, remains a relevant, on-going cultural narrative. My paintings operate within this dialogue, exploring questions of desire and gratification in spaces of extended longing." One specific series of paintings to be exhibited at NavtaSchulz, titled Chicago Girl, is based on two characters found in Watteau's once-contested Fete Champetre, one of two paintings by Watteau in the Art Institute's permanent collection. Typically Tanchak's paintings are complex social scenes of parties or gatherings. With acute attention to detail and color, the figures appear as apparitions of the subconscious while the backgrounds disorient with color and abstraction. This exhibition presents those more complicated paintings in contrast with Tanchak's ongoing series of intimate character studies. What is often so intriguing about Tanchak’s paintings is the tension created between her choice of material, (hand-cut aluminum) and her subject matter, (the female). The compositions are at once intuitive and refined; vulnerable and domineering. This industrial and moderne material not only acts as field and architecture for these frolicking and carefree women, but it also acts as accomplice to their mood. The artist often chooses to allow the reflective nature of the material to take the light of the exhibition space and fill in gaps in the characters bodies: faces blush during the day but become demure in the evening, skirts billow as the viewer travels past a piece. Once the composition is finished, Tanchak buffs the surface of the painting with thin layers of paint or she feathers on thin layers of white glaze. In this final step, previously unseen forms and gestures are lifted out and become essential to the picture. Tanchak is a 2003 MFA graduate of the School at the Art Institute of Chicago. She also received a BFA from Concordia University in Montreal in 2000. She has exhibited in London, Montreal, Tampa, Chicago, Toronto, and San Antonio. |
